Letter to Cooper on your third birthday

Dear Cooper-

You are my little bull in a china shop. There is absolutely nothing subtle about you. Your strength and independence take my breath away. From the moment you were born, you have had exceptional strength and determination. Even in the womb, you beat the odds and stunned our doctors when you survived through pregnancy complications. You are my miracle. You fought so hard inside the womb, and you came out fighting. I still see that spirit in you.

When you see something you want, you take it. You don’t wait. You don’t ask questions. You grab the world in your hands and you LIVE.

I love how you’re constantly saying, “Oops, sorry Mom.” Even though I suspect it’s insincere, the apology works every time because I am so taken aback at how clever you are at figuring out exactly what I what to hear. What mother wouldn’t soften after hearing, “I’m sorry Mom. It’s all my fault…” You sure know how to work me! You are very skillful at confusing and distracting your parents. When we’re asking you to do something, and you’re looking to stall, you respond with something like, “I’m JUST looking at my toys” or “I’m just playing with my firetruck.” For a second, I forget what I was saying or what I wanted you to do because I’m trying to figure out the relevance of your statement. You are good!

IMG_2747 You are also so funny! You crack me up with your complaints like, “What are you doing to me?!” or “What about me, Mom?!” You always speak up for yourself and I admire that. Last Christmas (when you were two and a half), I asked you what you wanted to put on your list for Santa. You replied, “A reindeer and some scissors.” It was one of the stranger requests I’ve heard, not a very typical Christmas list, but that’s who you are my love – so decisive and so sure of what you want.

IMG_2632 You are so expressive; when you are upset your brow furrows so deeply and your forehead scrunches together and people can see your mood from a mile away. When you are happy you have the brightest smile and the sound of your laughter can fill a room. Your laugh is the most infectious sound I have ever heard. I wish I could bottle it up and save it for a rainy day. IMG_2651I look at you and am in awe of how uninhibited you are. You are so full of joy!
Cooper, I love you with all that I am and I am so lucky to be your mommy.
